About
The book
Black Man White Industry tells the story of Don Martin, the only Black man in the United States to form his own textile corporation.
This story is about a young Black man who enters an industry by accident in 1975, straight out of high school, and goes on to break all barriers. It's a riveting account of a Black man bonding with his white counterparts in the menswear textile business. In addition, it details the history of men's tailored clothing and how the industry was in its golden years. This includes stories about many influential people who shaped an entire industry past and present, and how Don did business with practically every designer label imaginable. The book has many twists and turns that will take you on a journey through race relations, politics, marketing, and tremendous adversity.

“Be a positive force, stay authentic, and understand your marketplace to bond with customers,” says Don Martin, founder of luxury textile and tailored menswear business Don Martin International and author of “Black Man, White Industry: My Journey Through the Fashion World.” “Before the internet, people picked up the phone to connect with customers. It’s still the same, where people buy from who they like. But the challenge now is to get on social media and build an audience.”
Our
Testimonial
My Journey Through the Men’s Fashion World is an incredibly well conceived autobiographical work of self-made textiles magnate Don Martin providing a unique first person insight into the life of a sterling man of color who made breakthrough advances into an industry that had been closed to his race for centuries in the “land of opportunity “. A first generation contiguous United States son of parents native to the Virgin Islands. The first person insight is essentially a First Person of Color insight into an industry rooted in financial markets and a culture couture, haute and halt. Martin chronicles both his rise in the industry and the diminishing of formalities to ultra casually moderate to low cost goods.
Martin captures the curiosity of the reader while focusing upon central personalities’ prejudices, complexities, preferences and accommodations beyond status and race. He offers recollections on textiles design, continental centers on manufacturing and technology all the while introducing the reader to distinctions and directions from continent to continent including European, South America,
Asian and returning home to North America.Martin has chronicled from a unique perspective and without any pretense this journey and in so doing stripped away layers of an industry built upon the fields hosting the struggle of farmers to houses hoisting fashionistas and designers in a rawness that undressed those that dress.
Don, I am pleased to hear from you and look forward to hearing and ultimately meeting with you to discuss the status of our mutual respect for each other. Blessings in 2023 to the blessed who bless.
Great story about a fascinating industry from one of its key player and nicest guys.
Don Martin was one of the apparel industries shining stars, a real student of the business. More importantly he was/is a man of genuine integrity who didn’t have an easy path to success.
Congratulations on your book Don! You do us proud.
Amazing
What a great story about mens fashion, race relations, leadership, and sales. A must read.
